Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus. This tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, outer surface of the uterus, and other organs within the pelvic cavity. Endometriosis can cause a variety of symptoms, including pelvic pain, painful menstrual periods, pain during intercourse, and infertility.
At Iowa Women’s Health Center, we look at a combination of medical history, phsyical examinations, and imaging tests to help diagnose endometriosis.
Treatment options may include pain management through medications, hormonal therapy, and in severe cases, surgical removal of the endometrial tissue.
